The Center for Health Improvement (CHI) is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit health policy center based in Sacramento, California. CHI is dedicated to advancing policies and providing technical assistance services that improve population health and encourage healthy behavior. Since its inception in 1995, CHI has achieved a reputation for excellence in framing public health issues based on the five social determinants of health: our genetic makeup; our social and educational circumstances and achievements; the environment in which we live; our behavioral patterns; and the health services we receive.
Core Content Areas
CHI initiatives revolve around evidence-based prevention interventions that have been strongly recommended by public health experts across the country. Of these, we focus on interventions where there is the biggest opportunity to effect change, notably:
Children’s Health – including enhancing school readiness, universal preschool, oral health, and access to care
Aging – including increasing flu and pneumonia vaccines, hearing and vision screening, and colorectal screening
Tobacco-related Disease – including using telephone and physician counseling and health insurance benefit design features to increase quit rates
Physical Health and Nutrition – including implementing nutrition education programs in schools, restrictions on the sale of junk food, and integrated community programs to offer safe recreational opportunities
Emerging Health Issues – including increasing healthcare provider and community group education on autism and hepatitis C, tracking safety related measures, and demonstrating the efficaciousness of complementary medicine
